Wanna play bass guitar?
Did you ever had the dream to play bass guitar? This is your chance to learn the basics!
There are 3 different techniques:
- Finger (play with your fingers)
- Pick (play with a pick)
- Slap (play with your thumb and index finger)
But you first need to know the basics. Hold the bass guitar's neck with your left hand and hit the snares with your right hand. The left hand remains always the same, no matter which technique you use. Put your fingers onto the fret you must play with your left hand. More information about this, you can find in our 'reading tabs' article. A fret is a silver line. Sometimes there are round dots between those frets or even two dots. Before the 3th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 15th, 17th and 19th fret you can find one dot. Before the 12th fret are 2 dots. You can find frets faster using those dots. The main purpose is to learn how to play with 4 fingers from you left hand. This is very important; then you don't have to move your hand a lot. Beware that your fingers are straight. On that way it is easier to spread your fingers and reach the frets.
Now we can continue with the techniques. The first technique we will learn is the finger technique. It's quite simple. You hit the snare alternately with your index finger and your middle finger. This is done by your right hand. De next exercise may help you:
The letters above the notes are for your left hand. I stands for index finger, M for middle finger, R for ring finger and P for pink. The goal is to push the snare alternately with those fingers. The letters below the notes are for your right hand. The I stands for index finger and the M for middle finger. It is also possible to do this exercise backwards. But then you have to start with the middle finger so the I and M must be switched. You can do it on another position (like the 3th, 4th, 5th and 6th fret). But it is useful to start with higher fret because those frets are closer. Some bass players can play with 3 fingers of their right hand. This makes it... harder. For example, Robert Trujillo (Metallica) does so.
We will now talk about playing with a pick. A pick is a piece of plastic, about 2 or 3 cm. Put it between your thumb and index finger. This technique is actually the same as the finger technique, but now you are using the pick to hit the snares. You hit the snare upwards.
The letters above the notes are the same as we used on the fingering technique. The letters below the notes are for the right hand. But now U means you have to hit the snare upwards and D means hit the snare downwards. You can do this again on other positions or backwards, but then you don't need to switch U and D. Just do what you like most. The best thing is to look for the shortest path. Here it is not so important, but if you are playing more difficult music, it is! With this technique you can play faster than with your fingers.
